Day 27/28: IMRD + Introduction to Literature Review

Objectives:

• To understand the main components of an IMRD Paper
• To understand the purpose and structure of a Literature Review.
• To begin to analyze their own sources in order to find an appropriate organizational theme for their literature review.

Annotated Bibliographies*  --

In order to create an efficient literature review, we need to first collect all the appropriate sources to be used. It is for this reason that you were asked to create an annotated bibliography first. With this in mind we will begin today's class with a discussion of the Rubric for your Annotated Bibliographies. This assignment is due tonight 3/25 before midnight. This brief overview of the requirements, purpose, and grading criteria will provide time for any last minute questions. I look forward to reading them.

*Students who do not yet have a focus for argument need to adjust their thesis statements and annotations to include this. If you are having trouble finding a point of critique/an argument for your paper, please come see me.

Part III: Introduction to Literature Review [ (10:30-10:50]

To begin this assignment, we will start with a general discussion on the purpose and content of a Literature Review through  lecture and look at the two types of lit reviews--Critical and Descriptive. Please click HERE to access a handout that demonstrates both types.

We will then end by reading a sample literature review and identifying the main purpose and structure. (Sample Lit Reviews from Swales & Feak, 3rd ed., p. 329-330,335,353,362.)
