Day 15: Introduce Summary Critique I

Lesson Objectives:

• Identify basic organizational structure of a summary critique
• Learn steps to compose a summary critique
• Analyze how this style of writing is applied to their field of study
• Identify bias/unbiased words and phrases as applied to critiquing

Task 1: Schema Activation (5 min)

Before we get into the details of the components of your next major assignment, let’s practice the art of critiquing. I would like you to please get into groups of two or three and take a look at the first three slides on today’s power point. 

As a group, I want you to “critique” the images. Elect someone in your group to write down the key evaluative words and/or phrases. Then, I will have you share those words with the class. 

Do you think critiques are different in an academic setting? What may be the purpose behind critiquing academic work? 

Task 2: Introduction to Summary Critiques (25 min 10:05- 10:30)

Slides 6-21. Follow along with the next few slides in the presentation as we talk more about what a summary critique is and what it means to critique others' work and our own. As we go through the PowerPoint, complete this handout as you receive information from the lecture. Remember that this content exists in a video format here, as well, if you would like to review it later.

Task 3: Discussion (10 min 10:30-10:40)

Please get into groups of three or four and share your handout answers to parts I-III, then go over the discussion questions on part IV.  It’s also a communication class, so let’s communicate!

Homework: Read "What our education system needs is more F's" for the next class (It is in the handout).  Also, read this article (This is the research that will be critiqued). It is the first article in the set of articles we will be reading for the summary-critique unit. It can also be found under the second Unit titled, "Article #1.
