(W 1/23) Day 4: Communication Model/The Writing Process

• Explain how communication through writing is different from speaking
• Describe the ways through which writing can be un/successfully executed in terms of the communication model
• Explain what the writing process is through examination and reflection of what works for them as writers
• Demonstrate their understanding of a process by connecting their own process-driven practices to their practices in writing

Warm Up: Teacher Feedback (5 min)

Before beginning today's lecture, I would like to take a minute to discuss the feedback you will receive on your papers. 

Part I: Communication Model (10 min) 10:05-10:15

To begin class today, we will be discussing the act of "communication" and what are some elements that help writers communicate effectively or ineffectively. Click HERE if you would like to access the power point for this lecture. 

Part II: Getting Mentally Started & The Writing Process (25 min) [10:15-10:40]

One way to effectively communicate with our readers is to plan accordingly and consider our writing situation from a variety of angles. Click HERE or HERE to access a checklist that may be useful to getting us "in the correct mind frame" to begin composing. 

In addition to assessing our writing situation mentally, it is important to consider the actual steps writers take in composing work. To begin this discussion, I will ask you to complete a handout that deals with the steps you take in the writing process. After you have completed the chart, share your response with your classmates. Follow along on the power point as we go over the writing process steps together. Are your steps the similar to/different from  those discussed by the instructor? 

Time permitting, I would like you to identify with your writing style/approach with regards to the writing process. Click HERE to read about four common types of writing styles.  Which style do you most identify with? Perhaps you identify with parts of some and parts of others. Share your style with your partner.

Part III: Diagnostic Analysis Assignment (5 min) [10:40-10:45]

In the last part of today's class, I will cover the main directions with regards to your first major assignment in this course.You can access the directions to this assignment by clicking on the link under the Unit 1 heading on the sidebar to the left.

On Monday you have two assignments due: Reflection #1 and The Audience or Purpose.  Both assignment can be found under the corresponding unit on the left hand side of blog. The due dates are located  in parenthesis.
