Day 36: Outlining/Headings

Lesson Objectives:

• Review basic outlines for argument and problem solution papers
• Learn proper structure to APA headings and subheadings
• Practice creating outlines and placement of headings into their own papers 

Part I: Review of Outlines (10-15 min)
To start today's lecture, we will have a quick review of last class' content. To do so, I will be giving a short quiz dealing with the different outline patterns discussed in the last lecture.

Part II: Headings/Subheadings (15 min)
To begin, let us first discuss the basics to headings and subheadings. Click on HEADINGS SUBHEADINGS APA for a brief overview of the basics. As some of you are not using APA, you will need to check the manual for your citation style.

To finish this introduction into headings and subheadings, let us look to a sample APA research paper to evaluate the this student utilized them with her/his paper. click on the STUDENT SAMPLE APA PAPER and review the structure of the paper.

Part III: Workshop on outlining (20 min)
Now that we have looked at different outlines and headings that can be used within our argument papers, I would like to give you time to begin (or continue to) work on implementing structure into your essay. Starting with an outline is an important first step!!

Part IV: Review of "what constitutes as plagiarism" (5 min)
To end today's lecture, I would like to remind students about what constitutes as plagiarism. Click on the WHAT IS PLAGIARISM handout as we briefly go over it together. Plagiarism in the final paper will not be tolerated.

TO PARAPHRASE, you must:
1) Retain the same meaning
2) Have sufficiently different words and sentence structure
3) Provide in-text and bibliography citations

1) Use word for word (or ...  [ ] )
2) Use " " before and after text

Homework: Continue to work on your outlines/drafts. We will be signing up for individual conferences soon and I will need your complete draft in order to provide appropriate feedback.
