Day 20: Citation Styles and Online Resources

Lesson Objectives:

• Introduce some common citation styles according to field of study.
• Understand importance and function of citations in research and academics
• Introduce some common online resources for citation and research management.
• Discover options for points of critique through small group "think tanks" for upcoming assignment.   

Part I: In-Text Citations and Sources Warm up (10:00-10:10)

We will begin with a VERY brief introduction into citations with this CITATION POWER-POINT. After the PowerPoint, I will ask you to please click HERE or refer to the handout titled, "List of sources in different styles". You will work independently or in groups to complete this CHART. Share/compare with your group.

Concluding Discussion question:  
List three reasons why citations are an important and needed element for academics?




Part II: Resources: Know where to go  (10:10-10:15)

Part III: Quoting Review/ Feedback on Paraphrasing (10:15-10:35-20 min)

Part IV: Points of Critique Think-Tank (10:35-10:50-15 min)
As discussed in the last class, we will be getting into groups, working together to come up with at least three point for critique of the research and critique papers we read. As a refresher on vocabulary or content for critique, look to the POWER-POINT on critique language.


Elements for Assesment:

1) Is their reseach significant? Does it contribute to the field?
2) How well-executed were their research methods or approach to the subject?
3) Were their results or argument founded in clear evidence?
4) How effective was the style and organization of their paper?


Homework: Take 3-5 points from your group and construct a draft or outline of your Summary Critique Paper for Monday. We will be analyzing parts of it in class on Monday in Peer Review Sessions.
