(2/25) Day 18: Avoiding Plagiarism: Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing

Lesson Objectives:

• Understand the basics of what constitutes as plagiarism, how students get caught, and potential consequences 
• Differentiate a summary, a paraphrase, and a quotation from each other.
• Explain why one method of source integration is more appropriate than another based on the amount and content of information borrowed from the original source 

Part I: WHAT IS PLAGIARISM? 15 min

We are going to start with a very important lesson on "what is plagiarism." Please watch the following video HERE . After we have watched the video, I will ask you to work in groups to fill out this corresponding handout HERE.  Commute with your group members and try to think of additional examples that fit each category.

Part II: Introduction/Review on Quoting and Paraphrasing 20 min

Part III: Practice with Paraphrasing 15 min
Work to paraphrase parts of the critique. Post your paraphrase HERE in the Google Doc. Share paraphrase with group.

Part IV: Quoting: 
Small groups: Look to the response paper, do you see any memorable language that you would quote? Highlight that section. Tell your group WHAT you consider quoting and WHY you would do so.
